Anthemion Auctions Spring Fine Art Sale is set to draw record interest both within Wales and internationally. The auction, which takes place on the 19th March, includes the residual contents of a great Welsh estate; that of Mrs G.J Stepney –Gulston, formerly of Derwydd Mansion in Llandeilo.
The original sale of the contents was held by Sothebys and was marketed as the most historic house sale to be held in Wales since the war. The Mansion has an ancient and Royal history; the ground in front of the house was reputedly used as a titling yard, and King John is said to have visited the house in 1210 on his return from southern Ireland.
The sale at Anthemion in Cardiff offers over 200 items from the estate, with an estimated total value of up to £50,000.The collection includes a Chinese armorial bowl c.1760, decorated with the arms of Stepney with Lloyd in pretence, in addition to watercolours by Alan Stepney-Gulston who was a Captain of the Royal Carmarthenshire Artillery Militia and Deputy Lieutenant and High Sheriff of Carmarthenshire. There are crested family silverwares and portraits of family members together with the pedigree of the family of Gulston, and a framed and glazed family tree.
Other items from the estate include an 18th Century oak coffer bach, a World War I Military Cross issued to Lt A.S Gulston, estimated at £400 to £500 and a 17th century yew wood dining table estimated at £4000 to £6000.
The second collection to be offered for auction is a breathtaking array of twenty four paintings by Welsh artist Kevin Sinnott. Born in Sarn, South Wales, the artist has an international following, with pieces exhibited in The British Museum and the Metropolitan museum of art in New York. Sinnott’s paintings, awash with bold colours and imagery, have an intoxicating intimacy in the everyday human moments they describe. Auctioneer and valuer Ryan Beach MRICS stated “This is a truly superb collection of paintings, the scale and skill of which demand a viewing in person to appreciate their intensity. Kevin Sinnott is a highly sought after modern Welsh Artist, and we are delighted to be able to offer such a large selection of his works for auction in the country’s capital”
The auction at Anthemion on the 19th also includes an extensive gold coin collection and a diverse collection of Moorcroft pottery, amongst many other categories of Fine Art.
