500 BCE philosopher Heraclitus of Ephesus coined the phrase “The only constant in life is change“, which in the antiques market is particularly applicable to furniture. Sadly, gone are the days of the grand mansions with their multiple salons and sitting rooms, and a dozen or more bedrooms, each half the size of a football pitch. All of which has meant that the furniture in our homes has changed over the years too.

From an auction perspective the furniture market is relatively buoyant, but in a world where homes are being built on ever smaller scales, the tastes of our buyers are having to change to fit. Luckily, there’s a place for 1970’s Scandinavian, Ikea and Edwardian furniture, although perhaps not necessarily in the same room. So, if you have the space, and need some furniture, check out our auctions, you just might be able to grab a bargain fit for a king!
